ACTIVITIES - WALKWAYS and TRAMPING

MOUNTAIN TRACKS
Weather.

This is true Mountain country and weather conditions can change rapidly, especially from the south. Snow can be encountered at any time of the year. Be prepared with warm clothing.
Snow on pass
Climbs up such peaks as Manakau (2608 metres) and Te Ao Whekere (2590 metres) can be most rewarding. Routes, although not hard, are long and remote. Good equipment, fitness and experience are needed.

A day tramp up the Hapuku River to the Forks is well worth the effort but be prepared for wet feet.

Transport.
The only public transport to these tracks is by Taxi.

Huts
Hut passes must be obtained from the Dept. of Conservation to use huts on these tracks.
