Kaikoura walkways & tramping.

 Peninsula walks.  (click for further details and map)

Shoreline walk. Starting at Point Kean follows the tide line around the peninsula past Whalers Bay to South Bay. Passing seal and bird colonies with sea on one side and strangely twisted limestone formations and caves on tpeninsula walkwayhe other this walk takes about
2 1/2 hours. Watch the tides!
 

Cliff top Walk. This track follows the cliff top above the shoreline walk for about 35 minutes to the old whalers lookout above Whalers Bay. From here you can either take the link track down to Whalers Bay or continue across farmland for another 30 minutes to South Bay. 

South Bay - Kaikoura Walks. A 45-minute walk between South Bay Parade and Torquay Street on the Kaikoura side of the peninsula via the Nga Niho Pa site at the top of the hill.

Fyffe Palmer Track. A track crossing farmland at the top end of Mount Fyffe Road and on through regenerating bush to a loop track where ancient Matai, Totara and Rimu trees can be seen. 

Hinau Track. Starting at the Mount Fyffe car park, on this 45-minute loop track you can wander through large Hinau trees. It is an unusual stand of forest with Mahoe, Putaputaweta, Broadleaf, Tree Fuchias, Pigeonwood and Kanukas

.  Mount Fyffe. Views of Banks Peninsulakaikoura peninsula to the south and the North Island can be seen as a reward to anyone who climbs this track to the summit on a clear day. This trip takes about 8 hours return but can be broken by spending a night at the hut. 

Kowhai - Hapuka Circuit.A 2-3 day tramp over the rugged Kowhai Saddle through typical Kaikoura mountain country. This trip is classed as a route and is not marked in places. There two huts along the way, one in the Kowhai Valley, the other in the Hapuka Valley. Caution should be used in this area due to the alpine weather condmountain passitions. 
The above two trips are linked by tracks on Spaniard Spur or along the ridge from Mount Fyffe to the Kowhai Saddle. An alternative route to Mount Fyffe Hut is up Fenceline Spur from near the Mount Fyffe car park. Hut passes must be obtained from the Department. of Conservation to use above huts. 

A shuttle service is available to all above walks.
